Scholarship seeking is a competitive business.  In addition to standing against many other candidates for any given opportunity, students often must satisfy several criteria to have the chance to receive scholarship awards.  The following are a few general requirements for scholarship eligibility.

  • Citizenship.  For most scholarships, applicants are required to be legal citizens of the country in which the opportunity is offered.  Therefore, students applying for scholarships in the U.S. must possess U.S. citizenship.  Some examples include the Horatio Alger Association Scholarship for those having overcome adversity as well as the AXA Achievement Scholarship Program given to students who've made great strides in non-academic and community activities.
  • Course of Study.  As obvious as it may seem, some scholarships require that candidates be pursuing a specific course of study in order to be eligible for the award.  For instance, education majors from Massachusettes may apply for the BNY Mellon John L Bates Scholarship  and business majors may consider going after the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) Scholarship, so long as their business focus is media and/or marketing.
  • GPA.  While it isn't necessary for students to possess the perfect, coveted 4.0 GPA in order to have a shot at receiving scholarship funds, most opportunities DO have a minimum.  Potential Gates Millennium Scholars pursuing degrees in math, science and engineering are required to have a cumulative 3.3 GPA in addition to many other rules.  Less strict is the Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship for undergraduates studying in fields such as marine science, agricultural science and computer science, which demands a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Of course each opportunity comes with its own set of regulations and requirements for applicants.  Therefore, make sure to carefully review scholarship guidelines to ensure that you meet the criteria for receiving this type of financial aid for college.  To find some of these awesome opportunities, check out these useful sites and visit the Go Financial Aid solutions center today.
